Natural Home Remedies For Headaches

by Stephen Silva

Unfortunately, headaches are a common trial in the average American's life. With these natural remedies, a headache sufferer can alleviate some of the intense pain. Continue reading to discover which of the following remedies you may even have in your home already.

Lavender Oil

Lavender is a useful home remedy for headache pain and luckily enough, it smells great too! It can either be inhaled or applied topically. The recommended ratio for inhaling lavender is two to four drops for ever two to three cups of boiling water. A lot of other medicinal oils need to be diluted in order for them to be safely applied to the skin but fortunately, lavender is not one of them. It can safely be applied externally without needing to dilute it but it should never be taken orally.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is another wonderful smelling oil that can aid in alleviating headache pain and research shows that it can specifically help with tension headaches. It has vasoconstriction and vasodilation properties which means that it gets the blood flowing throughout the body. As headaches are often a result of poor blood flow, peppermint oil can help in opening and closing the blood vessels that promote flow. The peppermint oil can also clear up clogged sinuses which allows for more oxygen into the bloodstream.

Basil Oil

Another great smelling and tasting home remedy for headaches is basil oil. It has muscle relaxant properties that can release tension that may be causing the headache pain.

Changing Your Diet

Sometimes the cause of headache pain is a result of the food we eat. Certain foods such as dairy, chocolate, peanut butter, avocado, banana, and citrus, onions, meats with nitrates, foods high in MSG, etc. are all foods that can contribute to headaches. Keep track of the food you eat and also the frequency of your headaches to see if there is a correlation between the two and then try to change your diet accordingly to see if the frequency of your headaches lessens.

DIY Scalp Massage

Another way to alleviate headache pain is to give yourself a scalp massage. This is something that you can do anywhere and anytime, not necessarily at home. Massage in general has been shown to relieve headaches due to tight muscles and tension especially when using reflexology (special pressure points in the hands and feet). Another bonus as a result of a good scalp massage is that it helps your hair grow too!

Flaxseed

Sometimes headaches are caused by inflammation and inflammation can be reduced by consuming omega-3 fatty acids which are found in flaxseed. Flaxseed can be used in many different forms including as an oil and ground seeds.
