Don't Let Your Pillowcase Be The Reason For Your Acne Breakout

by Stephen Silva

At the end of a long and exhausting day, there are few things more relaxing than crawling into your bed and planting your head on your pillowcase. However, this restful slumber could be responsible for your breakouts. If you're following a balanced diet and cleaning your face regularly, and you're still experiencing breakouts, your pillowcase may be the culprit.

Oil and Dirt Haven

Although your pillowcase may look clean on the surface, pillowcases are often a haven for oil and dirt collection. Whether it's the oil from your hair or the dirt from your face, it all gets transferred. When you lie down on your pillowcase, this collection gets transferred on to your skin, clogging your pores. This often leads to acne and blemishes.

As your pores clog, this causes the normal surface-level skin bacteria found on your face to penetrate into deeper layers of the skin. This irritates the skin, causing it to inflame and form a pimple.

Reducing your Risk

Regular cleaning.

The best way to avoid this type of mishap is to keep your pillowcases laundered. Aim to clean your pillowcases at least two times a week. Keep in mind that both oil and dirt can also build up on your actual pillow. Make it a point to also wash your pillow at least once every two months to ensure it is clean as well.

Change your pillow.

Changing the type of pillow you use can also help avoid the transfer of oil and dirt to your face. Consider switching to a pillow that is made from natural materials. These materials generally breathe better than artificial options, helping reduce the transfer of oil and dirt to your skin. Organic cotton, wool and buckwheat are all options to consider.

Your Dermatologist

If you're diligent about keeping your pillowcase and pillow clean and frequent acne outbreaks still seem to be something you're struggling with, it might be time to visit your dermatologist. Your dermatologist can get to the source of the problem. In some instances, there could be an underlying medical condition that is causing you to experience your acne outbreaks. Once a proper diagnosis has been made, your dermatologist can then formulate an effective treatment plan to help eliminate current and future outbreaks.
